JOB DESCRIPTION for Part-time Director of Music/Organist
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
- Provide organ music and direct the choir for the Sunday morning service (10:30 a.m.) and the preceding choir warm-up/rehearsal (currently at 9:45am)
- Select and insure enough copies of music for the choir
- Organize, plan, and direct choir rehearsals (currently on Wednesday nights)
- Plan, invite performers, budget, advertise, and execute a spring/summer concert series of four concerts. There is a committee that can help with this, and a dedicated budget to pay artists.
- The Director of Music/Organist is a 12-month, part-time position with six paid Sunday vacation days per year and a stipend for continuing education. No health insurance.
- Remuneration: $24000 - 28000 for the qualified applicant
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Select and provide appropriate music for service, including but not limited to preludes, postludes, choral anthems, communion music, and occasional offertories
- Accompany and lead the choir in anthems and hymns
- Accompany and lead the congregation in the singing of hymns and service music
- Select hymns and service music in conjunction with the Pastor and occasionally, the Worship Committee
- Oversee the upkeep of the pianos and the organ, with scheduled organ tunings and servicing through Reynolds Associates
- Provide qualified substitute organists when necessary
- Play for weddings and funerals, for an additional fee, with the right to decline such services
- Opportunity to play recitals and teach privately, using the church instruments
SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be willing to work weekends and holidays, and occasional evenings (according to the church calendar), such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Christmas Eve
- Minimum of 2 years experience as a church organist
- Must have leadership skills as a musician and as a responsible and visible church leader
- Interpersonal skills congruent with a church work environment
- This position requires approximately 20 hours per week and offers a salary of $ 24000 - 28000 (negotiable according to experience and training)
- Demonstrated experience as a church organist and choir director
- Bachelor degree in music or equivalent experience
- An understanding of liturgical music and the liturgical calendar
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
First Presbyterian Church is located in downtown New Castle, Indiana. There is one Sunday morning service (10:30) using traditional hymnals: The Worshiping Church and Songs for Praise & Worship. We have a beautiful two manual, tracker-action 23 rank pipe organ built by the Holtkamp Organ Company of Cleveland, Ohio, and installed in 1982, and a baby grand Steinway piano in the Sanctuary. Separate pianos are in the Chapel and downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. We also have Malmark Hand Chimes (three octaves). FPC welcomes all people, inclusive of age, race, education, economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and special needs.
Our current organist is moving out of state at the end of July, so this position will begin in August.
