Music at First
First Presbyterian Concert Series

Concerts are held in the sanctuary, and are well attended by members of our church and guests from the community. Attendees are invited to join us for a reception honoring the performers immediately after the concert downstairs in our fellowship hall.   First Presbyterian Church is handicap accessible and all concerts are FREE.

Mark Murray, trumpet
Michele Murray, piano

Dr. Mark Murray is an Emeritus Professor of Music, after teaching at Anderson University for 37 years, until May of 2017. He holds a doctorate in music literature and trumpet performance from Indiana University. 

He is comfortable performing in a variety of musical idioms, and has performed with artists such as the Temptations, Lou Rawls, Roger Williams, Ann Jillian, Carol Channing, Sandi Patty, Peter Nero and the Jan Garber Orchestra. Besides being a freelance musician, he played principal trumpet with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years and was a member of the Monument City Brass Quintet and “Rinati.” For over a decade, he was a performer, arranger, and program developer for “Book Readers and Horn Blowers,” a not-for-profit organization that presented books and music to children. He is currently a freelance musician and plays with Alpha Brass, a musical outreach of the Anderson First United Methodist Church.

Michele Murray is an Associate Professor Emeria at at Anderson University where she taught for 33 years. Along with her husband , she has given recitals at universities and churches throughout the U.S. and France. Michele currently serves as pianist for First United Methodist Church in Anderson.   

Mark and  Michele, have recorded a CD entitled “Slow Waltz for Trumpet and Piano,” a collection of lyrical pieces by Albinoni, Bach, Debussy, Faure, Haydn, Rachmaninoff, Peeters, Ravel, and Schubert.

Gert Kumi
Violin

Gert Kumi began his musical career in Albania, where he  was the five time winner of the national Young Artist Competition.  He made his Albanian solo debut with the Tirana Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 15.  He went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where he was mentored by many famous violinists including Itzhak Perlman. 

Kumi has performed as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician across four continents including North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He made his Lincoln Center debut in February of 2006 performing as a soloist in the Concerto for Solo Violin, Piano and String Quartet by French composer Ernest Chausson.

He has traveled and performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, Vatican City, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China, and the Central Conservatory of Beijing.

Kumi has collaborated with many world-renowned artists including singer Elton John, composer John Williams, violinist Itzhak Perlman, gospel superstar Sandy Patty, and more.

Heather Scott
Cello

Originally from Waterford, Michigan, Heather Scott began playing cello at age 10. She studied with Paul Wingert of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and as a teenager played with the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra. She later studied with Anthony Elliott, professor at the University of Michigan, and Robert deMaine, principal cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She received her B.M. in Cello Performance from Ball State University and earned her M.M.in Cello Performance at Bowling Green State University, where she received the graduate string quartet fellowship and sat as principal cellist of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Heather performed as a member of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra from 2008-2009 and has played for The Virginia Opera and The Virginia Symphony. She has been a member of Orchestra Indiana since 2015, and has been a regular sub for The Fort Wayne Philharmonic since 2016.  She has twenty years of experience giving private cello lessons to students of all ages ranging from beginner to college. She also has taught cello and string methods at Taylor University, Henderson State University, and Ouachita Baptist University.

Stacey Edwards
Piano

Stacey Edwards is a pianist and teacher from Muncie, Indiana. After earning her master’s degree in piano performance from Ball State University she worked as adjunct faculty at Ball State for 15 years, teaching music history courses and working as a staff pianist. She has been fortunate to play for many different community and collegiate choral ensembles throughout her life. Stacey now resides in Indianapolis with her husband and two boys and plays for the Indianapolis Children's Choir, and for Indy Voice and Master Chorale. After working at Anderson University as a piano instructor and pianist for two years, she currently serves as a staff pianist at Butler and Ball State Universities in addition to teaching private piano lessons.

Ball State University Chamber Choir

This Chamber Choir is Ball State University’s most prestigious concert choir, typically comprised of mostly upper-level music majors and graduate students. The Chamber Choir has performed throughout the country and around the world. This 30 member choir, conducted by Dr. Andrew Crow, will perform works including "Bogoroditse Devo," by Arvo Pärt, "Alleluia," by Randall Thompson, "O magnum mysterium," by Morten Lauridsen, and "How Can I Keep from Singing?" by Dan Graves.
